hello to everyone around you the mail Maurizio
Dear Friends LUGLIO 2010
Poi gli aiuti cominciarono ad arrivare e le attivita della missione ripresero to work and then the time is always missing. Among reconstruction, reactivation of the projects, submission of documentation, the usual daily unexpected and my small little family, are always short of time. And mourn and a time in which the dear old letters and photos of 'normal' ... ... ... things you 'submit', you had to wait about 3 weeks because they arrived at their destination and another 3 for a response. Now with e-mail, digital photos and instant information you request arrives today and tomorrow they ask you what already happened and that you're late. there is always some negative and positive in everything.
Anyway, here's some update on school children in general and the situation in Haiti and the mission. As for children, an initial summary information has been sent some time ago just to let you know if the baby was fine and he was alive. I state that all schools have been detained for three months and have been officially reopened after Easter in April. Obviously not all schools have reopened and those who like us (thanks to private funds, donations, aid of any organization or state funds ... .... Very rare the last case) they have had the chance to have re-opened under very Spartan, with tents or sheds made with wood and sheets in the courtyard. On the other hand there was no other way because even if the schools could be considered viable, the psychosis of the earthquake was very strong and so neither children nor teachers wanted to come in concrete structures.
When schools reopened, it took another two months before the presence of children become significant. Many were in the province with their families, others lived in makeshift tents with all the inconvenience that this entails, and still others had left the area for a time and then returning.
In generale c’e molta comprensione ma sembra che molti non si rendono conto che in Haiti c’e stato un terremoto che destroyed half of the capital, has more than 200,000 lives, 300,000 injuries, almost one million homeless and a half million people still living in tents. An earthquake that destroyed public and private facilities and knocked out the few functioning infrastructure. An earthquake that would have crippled any country of the "first world" (I never liked this definition, but at least makes an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat sarcastic) let alone this country that already was one of the poorest before the earthquake. So, I understand that we are in the information age, but there are times instantaneous 'physical' that can not be avoided ... .... Malgrado tutto stiamo seguendo i nostri bambini che vengono a scuola e mangiano ogni giorno, i progetti di ricostruzione avanzano malgrado le pioggie e tante difficolta materiali del posto, malgrado tutto anche nuovi progetti stanno prendendo piede e malgrado tutto siamo ancora qui a cercare di fare del nostro meglio to be an effective bridge between you, dear benefactors, and the many people who benefit from your help.
I remember for example that from November 2009 until after Christmas, our friends at Chieri, headed by Andrew and Marina Condro have given a great deal to do to organize fundraising activities and materials, send information and letters of thanks, prepare containers ... ... ... then finally after Christmas there was maybe a bit of rest in sight and instead to the disaster affected Haiti in January and since then have been working non-stop on many fronts where they are. And for me it was not very different. Immediately after the earthquake, among the confusion and screams of the moment and the destruction that was also in the mission, I remember thinking that this was the time I returned to Italy because I thought I could never find the necessary funds to start over. Instead Providence surprised me once more and the response to the needs and arrived shortly and with great generosity and for this reason that we are already able to reconstruct and rebuild many things in just 4-5 months. With the work we are in fact already well advanced. The house was rebuilt and the elderly and the elderly these days will be transferred from the tent to their rooms. There are still many 'details' to end well (electrical, plumbing, painting, new furniture, new cabinets, etc ....) But they can already take possessione delle camere.
6 months have passed since the earthquake and for the mission we are already able to do many things but honestly speaking, I find it difficult to coordinate everything from A to Z to perfection and I can not to write much or give the mission more frequently, and I apologize for that.
We are trying to cope with a situation that no one could have foreseen or imagined in any way in these situations and solutions are found along the way.
The situation in the country and difficult to define. The interlude of the World Cup has allowed the government to 'breathe' a little, and put off the many problems later. Here are crazy for football and in that month, between June and July, as well as to live, survive and watch and talk about football and not fact. Now re-emergence of half a million people living in tents, the inevitable rains arriving in the evening from 2-3 weeks, just outside the cyclone season (Sept. / Oct.), The need to have a new president, the debris still on the road, the crux of RECONSTRUCTION: where, when, who, as it will set ... ... .. even if you try to coordinate the many NGOs in the country. There a beautiful mess. Very little has been done to date by the earthquake and no one really knows why. The rumors are not there yet money in the coffers of the state, political parties that want to respect the constitution and elect a new president, as they have done since February, the opposition refused to have a Board of Control (as they should use the funds) also composed of foreigners led by Bill Clinton, unable to formulate an action plan for reconstruction ... ... ... .. well, no matter what are the real reasons, the fact is that very little has been done.
also circulating a few weeks ago the rumor that the population demands the return of Jean Claude Duvalier as president and this says a clear picture of how people are desperate. Rather him than the void there now. In fact, in my simple opinion, the current President Preval is not a bad person but it certainly did not do charisma ability to manage an emergency situation so monstrously. The poor guy does not know how to get on.
Fortunately, the United Nations and several contingents of police of different nations, including even our Police officers are well aware on the streets of the capital to help the local police and why we say that crime does not is a 'phenomenon' despite the situation.
Six months have passed since the earthquake, and little has been done. Many reports on the speculation because no one really knows why ... but ... I simply think that the scale of the tragedy and was of biblical proportions and that even a Western country would have had enormous difficulty (well ... .. it seems to me that the problems of the post Earthquake in Aquila have not really been solved), let alone a country like Haiti, already on his knees in decades.
On the one hand there is the international community ready to invest billions for reconstruction, but vuole anche piani ben precisi, controlli, efficacia, onesta, rapidita e accontabilita…….dall’altra c’e un paese dove mancano le scuole per mandare i figli, dove mancano gia in tempi normali i piu ‘banali’ tasselli infrastrutturali di una societa : elettricita, acqua potabile, gas, strade, strutture sanitarie e scolastiche.
Thanks to you and to the generosity of so many other people, we do not have to wait long to start over. Of course, we are experiencing very intense months for the amount of work and there will be plenty of rest for months to come but I am sure that around October / November we can look with satisfaction at what we have achieved together. The paradox is that not only the earthquake but that did not stop us 'thank you' to this event we also help our people with much more effectively in the future.
I wanted to greet you and thank you before the summer holidays. We will not have holidays but at least this time I will have time to recapture a lot of things that are overdue: pictures, documents, billing, e-mail into oblivion ... ... ... ..
Thank you all happy holidays and good rest. Best regards, Maurizio
